he article analyzes Pierre de Ronsard’s short treatise Abbregé de l’art poetique françois in comparison with Italian poetic theory. The general historical and cultural context of this work and a brief description of the text itself are given. The uniqueness of the trea-tise’s communicative attitude is revealed. Using the technique of close reading, features of Ronsard’s poetic theory (or French poetology in general) that are not obvious outside of comparative perspective are revealed: the specificity of the social aspect of ideas about poetry, the role of competition as a principle of organizing a poetic community, Ronsard’s variations of the topoi of “first poets”, “pleasant craft”, features of prescriptivism in the treatise, traces of Ronsard’s acquaintance with the poetological ideas of Aristotle.
