This review examines the history of the study of Italian verist writers. Originating as an imitation of French naturalists, verism later became an independent trend, and the works and ideas of its founders (G. Verga and L. Capuana) had a great influence on the future generation of Italian writers (G. D’Annunzio, L. Pirandello). Many literary critics, both contemporaries of Verga and Capuana and those whose articles and monographs have been published more recently, have studied verismo. The main objective of the present review is to show the evolution in the evaluations of this literary school.
