Abstract

The story of Nikolai S. Leskov Theatrical hairdresser (Tupejnyj khudozhnik, 1883), which has long become a classic, does not cease to attract the scholars’ attention. The academicians of various interests continue to turn to this work: historians and theorists of literature, linguists, local historians, culturologists, philosophers, demonstrating a range of different approaches. This review article analyzes some most significant works considering relationships between title and subtitle, biographical aspect in the history of creation of this story, semantic function of “numerology” in it, the figures of “reliable narrator” and “Bacchic man” (“vakhicheskij chelovek”) etc.
